Mascots Golf Championship 2018

On Wednesday 11th July 2018 Mascots from across Devon participated in the annual Adventure Golf championship.

St. Andrews, Royal Birkdale, Muirfield, Ladram Bay – the golfing calendar is steeped in historic venues, with equally dramatic scenery that invites a sense of anticipation. Would the 2018 Mascot Golf Championship continue this trend?

The event tee’d off at Ladram Bay at 1.30pm on the famous Jurassic Adventure Golf course, a venue well known for it’s impressive obstacles, prehistoric rock formations and dinosaurs.

The mascots were drawn into 2 groups (Team 1 & Team 2), each team contained 3 players. Two rounds were played, with the best scores being totalled up at the close of play. If no clear winner exists then the tournament is decided by a shootout.

Leading up to the event the big talking points in the club house (otherwise known as the Swimming Pool complex) was the form of Buddy Bear. Would 2018 be the year another mascot mounted a challenge to this insurmountable player?

The backstory: 2015 had seen Buddy the Bear exit prematurely at the group stages, since then he has reinvented his putting technique, which he proved by going on to win the 2016 & 2017 tournaments – an unprecedented feat in the modern game. 2018 would make it three wins in a row!

A total of 7 Mascots made the final cut, below are the entrants, results, group classifications & 2016-17 form guides.

The Winner: Gilbert the Station Master

A tense opening round saw little to separate the leaderboard. In the commentary box thoughts were instantly cast back to the memorable shootout of 2015 – surely this wouldn’t happen again?

During the second round, with his unrivalled ability to handle pressure, we saw Gilbert the Station Master putt his way victory with some truly exquisite short play.

‘Appy Angus had a settle for 2nd place, ever a consistent performer he has now recorded 3 podium finishes in 3 years (2nd / 2nd / 3rd). We’ve no doubt 2019 will see him ranked amongst the favourites once again.
